Today was our park-museum day in Leon.
Up and out before 8 a.m. to find CIMA - a park run by a group to show the four types of habitats in Nicaragua and the plants that grow there. We had a wonderful guide who conveyed all the info in Spanish and I understand pretty well. We learned about medicinal plants and trees, uses of various trees and all the names, but don,t ask me!
Then we found our way to the contemporary art museum, quite wonderful, representing modern artists from all over Central America.
By noon we were quite hungry and so found some food, waited a long time since a very big group showed up and were all served before us. Don,t order sandwiches in Nicaragua.
We went back to the art museum - Ortez-Guardian Museo de Arte Fondacion - and finished seeing the large exhibit, then made our way to a very, very small museum of Primitive Art. It was the home of Alejandro Benito Cabrera, a lovely man, sitting in a very small front room with only three small paintings. He told us his story of being discovered and invited to U. of Pittsburgh, also to Cornell U. and several other places for three weeks. He showed us articles about him, pictures and gave us a folder that includes other artists from an exhibit in Managua. He was the highlight of the day.
We completed our museum day by visiting the Museo-Archivo Ruben Dario, which describes Dario,s life, poetry, travels, wives, family. Ruben Dario is a national hero and there are many statues of him, places named after him and such. So it was interesting to see a bit about him.
By this time it was very hot and I was pooped, so we returned to our hostel, took showers, Yo bought a liter of beer and we settled into hammocks to further read about our travels. We came over to this internet place and both of us have been frustrated by not being able to download any photos.
I might try. Tomorrow we leave for the beach very early in the morning.
