1/27-29/12: Panajachel, Guatemala

Rode the bus, then

Climbed to a lookout point above Lake Atitlan
With new friends
After attending a Mayan healing ceremony

In a cave below the highway
A young man, with a malady
Accompanied by his mother and sister
The kind, normally dressed shaman
Administered smoke, prayers, blessings
In front of a smoky fire
Candles to the ancestors deeper in the cave
Were lit by the seekers of health and well being.
We all sat and observed
Taking in the timelessness of the ritual.

Yesterday on a splendid morning
We swam in the clear blue waters of Atitlan

With new friends and old
Stopping to see lovely gardens coming and going
Offered lunch by folks from Albuquerque

The evening again at the Indonesian place

Where Steve and Elisabeth have a gig
Every Saturday eve
Fun dancing, singing, meeting new people

And another dinner invite for later in the week (which didn't really happen)
Ending with Havdalah at home.

The day before we took a boat out on the lake
To visit several other villages
One to see the old church, the marketplace

The second to eat - Indonesian food again.

By afternoon the choppy waters were too tumultuous
To visit yet another village

And, drenched and rocked and bumped,
We got home safely
To the warmth of the sun
To Shabbat dinner with the Albuquerque folk

Atitlan's many faces, many goods,

All the time women and children looking to sell their wares,
Cloth in many shapes, sizes and forms,

Food,

Belts,
Nuts,
Into restaurants, on boats, always hawking,
Outside the church,
Up the alleys,
Please buy my goods.

Tomorrow we go to a Hot Springs in the mountains
North.
Tonight dinner but the Mayan shaman friend of Steve's
A Shaman from Norway was still too ill
amoebas!
