12/12/13: KIGALI, RWANDA!

Long, long hours of travel, including a few hours in the Adis Ababa airport, and we finally are in Kigali!  We were picked up by Juvenal, Mary Metzger's taxi driver, who helped us exchange money
(they really only accept bills 2006 on and only $50's & $100's for the best rate: 678 Rwandan Francs to the $1).  That's quite the wad of money for our slim $100 bills.  We tried sending the box to Abayudaya but the place we took it to wanted $150 to mail it.  Tomorrow we will try to send it by bus. Yehudah is playing with our phone Mark Nedleman lent us that we just put a SIM card in for local calls.

We are staying in probably the most posh place of this trip, with luxurious beds, hot water shower, everything gorgeous.  We will go out to dinner with Mary, who works at the US embassy here and hails from Portland. She's a friend of the former husband of one of Yehudah's relative's.

Kigali - very pretty, rather quiet, paved streets, children playing in schoolyard down the hill, very green, houses dot the hillside. Folks in need were hanging around the money exchange place.....to be expected.....but hordes of kids aren't following us seeking anything......

Exhausted, we slept until Mary came home, had a lovely dinner the maid had cooked - yummy pizza and salad - and learned about Mary's colorful life in the foreign service. She is the secretary to the American Ambassador to Rwanda, a hippy from Portland!  She is kind, relational and we all have something in common - a taste for adventure.

Tomorrow we will explore Kigali, then meet with the HROC folk in the afternoon.
