12/17/11: More Snorkling

Synopsis: Snorkeling at Playa Guiones, dinner, Saturday Market, getting to Nicaragua

Yesterday Yo and I took off for a 2 1/2 -3 mile walk down the beach all the way to the south end of Playa Giones to go snorkeling.  The snorkeling was great!  We saw lots of schools of small fish, yellow & black striped, a tiny iridescent blue fish I remember seeing when we snorkeled in the Osa, the long fish Yo saw the day before.  And we were braver and snorkeled all the way along the rocky wall out to where it rounded towards the next beach.  It was quite shallow and so visibility was great.

Negatives:  I walked in flip-flops: a no-no for such a long walk so I wound up coming back barefoot, which was fine.  One foot fell into a hole between two rocks and I scraped my knee.  We didn't bring water - I had put the large water bottle in the frig and neither of us replaced it with another one - but I brought along some chips with salt so we had those.  It was so fabulous even with all these mishaps.  Learning curve.

We ate out with Richard at a lovely place.  Everywhere here caters to the gringo crowd.  lots of fish - so Yo and I each had a fish dish, 1/2 order and there was plenty to eat.

Today the three of us went on a long walk to find that Saturday market, a small group of tables with food and arts & crafts to sell.  I found a great ring for my wedding finger - part of the plan was to find cheap wedding bands - $1 - copper & silver from Mexico that the guy had bought a long time ago - and I really liked it!
We tasted yummy cheeses and bought some fruit and chocolate bread for later.  On the way back we ran into a fellow selling Tico easy lunch food - like empanadas with some cheese, pollo y rice which we just ate for lunch.

I will wander around and take some pictures today of the playa y the surroundings as the photos we posted of the Playa where  the turtles lay their eggs don't do justice to the lushness and color of where we are staying.

We have also figured out that even if we cannot get tickets ahead of time for Nicaragua that there's buses leaving every hour that you cannot reserve seats for that will leave us at the border and from there we can board a Nicaraguan bus to get to Granada.  It might be slower but cheaper - $10 - and we will get there.
And we are figuring out how to get back to San Jose from here - on the noon bus from Playa Giones on Monday.

So we have two more days here.  There are two small swimming pools here, hammocks, a bar and restaurant but we haven't actually eaten here.  Richard is right now getting a massage and yesterday morning he took a surfing lesson.  We are using his computer for now.

Pura vida!
Juana
