1/12/14: ABAYUDAYA MUSIC and DANCE FESTIVAL

1/12/14: Abayudaya Music and Dance Festival

Sunday morning Yehudah and Israel drove into town to shop for food.

Yo brought back more paper for the girls and I made up packets for them plus the crayons he bought on Friday.  I guided the three Kulanu visitors over to Tehilah's where they collectively bought about 10 pieces of paper bead jewelry.  Tehilah was so happy and hugged me after they left.  They were happy to step into a Ugandan home.  They had originally thought to go into town, but I suggested that they walk around the community here, which they did, and buy locally.

The Abayudaya Music and Dance Festival in the afternoon was amazing, with all the groups dancing traditional African dance, with some songs dedicated to welcoming Kulanu in gratitude.  We watched others dance into the dance being performed to give dancers money contributions.

I got up during a dance being performed by one of our sponsored orphans who Aaron pointed out to me.  I danced with her to wild applause for my talent!  I got up another time when many people were dancing and giving money to the local group.  Such amazing talent!  Yehudah took movies and so never got up to dance.

Below are some photos with one of our sponsored teens - Esther Matama. - and her elder dad, who is recovering from surgery.  Such a beautiful girl!  She wants to be a doctor. Our five other children were not present at the festival, so, unless we made an effort to go meet them this will not happen.

Afterwards, I wrote a letter with D'vorah, a young girl who lives in the Rabbi's house with her mother Yael and sisters, who will be Dov and Elisha's b'nai mitzvah buddy, a sweet, great dancer. Took photos, sent it off.  Spent some time at the guesthouse with the guests and on computer.

For dinner Yehudah and I made guacamole, which Tehilah liked, but neither Israel nor Yehudit liked it. Oh well! Yo suggested that she make chapatis out of the corn flour she uses to make porridge, but she just made it the usual way, like mashed potatoes. Mixed with the guacamole and tomatoes, it wasn't too bad. And the rice was tasty with the beans she had made the night before. She uses an Indian spice in lots of her dishes. It's a mix of cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

Tomorrow we will visit JJ Keki's place.
