1/15/14: TOBIN CLINIC / 2 CL TRAININGS ON NABUGOYE HILL

1/15/14: WORK DAY

kids watching soap opera on TV
Yehudah went to the Tobin Clinic today and Joanie stayed on Nabugoye Hill to do 2 Trainings, one with the Women's Banking Group from around the area and the second with a large group of computer students.

Joanie spent an hour observing the women's bank groups.  There are 4 groups.  They meet on Wednesday mornings, sitting on large mats under the trees.  Three women in each group keep the same accounts.  Women contribute from 500 to 2500 Ugandan Shillings, so from 20 cents to a dollar or so, to the "bank".  The money is kept in a locked metal box, with all their small account books and the ledgers.  A woman who can guarantee that she can pay it back is able to take out a loan.  She pays it back with 10% interest.  At the end of the year they divide up the money, including this interest paid back.  And begin again with the new year. A woman may belong to several of the groups if they wish and can afford it.

After the groups were done I did a few dances, then introduced the first CL training to 12 interested women.  We were able to do the first two exercises.  I made friends with one woman who spoke English and who is a head teacher at a local school.  I brought her back to the house to give her more information and to show her the book.  I am inspired to take photos of all the pages and to send it out to all the students with emails.

After lunch I met with about 35 computer students, including several teachers.  In 2 hrs we practiced our main 3 lessons plus ended with two dances. They all spoke English and have emails, so this was easier than the morning where only two women spoke English.

Electricity was off all day until late afternoon, so I worked on typing up some papers, so as not to carry them along.

Yehudit and I will Skype with Miko tomorrow evening at 5:30 pm
