1/8-9/14: MBALE: OUR FIRST DAY APART!

1-8-14: Yo at Clinic, Joanie on Nabugoye Hill
1-9-14: CL Training with Teens

Our homestay - home away from home
Cloudy morning.  Joanie had an "issue" in the morning, wound up taking a shower and washing some clothes in the bathroom.  Yehudah went off early in the morning with Israel to town, to spend the day at Tobin Clinic, in his purple nursing attire.  He is bringing a white coat to the doctor, a bit stained but perhaps someone can clean it.  Yesterday Joanie received info about using tin cans for creating an extended wi-fi system from the tech guy.  Harriet is bringing the wires and small connectors necessary to make the system work.  Since we are living in the home closest to the wi-fi systems - at the guesthouse and at the high school computer center - this will be the first house for the experiment, with the rabbi's house.  Maybe, it will even happen while we are here! (Sadly, Harriet did not receive the wires in time to bring them with her, so the project is deferred until the wires arrive with someone else...sad...)

Joanie was invited to talk with all the women from the surrounding area about CL this morning.  They were all gathered to update their ledgers.  They have a micro-loan system.  The women invest money into the system, other women take loans and pay a small interest when they pay back the loan, which is then divided among the investors at the end of the year.  Four groups met on blankets on the grass near the gate.  Naume translated for Joanie.  It was decided women would meet with Joanie next Wed morning from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, plus the Jewish women want to meet on Shabbat afternoon.  We shall see.  One woman wanted to take a photo with Joanie, so she clicked one! Much laughter.

Many of the homes we have stayed in have had the tv on most of the time and this is one of them. This time, along with the dominance of news shows, there's been a dubbed soap opera "Maid in Manhattan" which looks to be produced in Mexico or who knows where. Also, the kids have been watching some very violent shows, including one tonight of a Chassidic exorcist and a demon inside a little girl. Joanie has vocalized objections but they have been more or less ignored. We have been able to stay abreast of local news if not world news. For example, the Ugandan President deployed troops to South Sudan without getting approval of the legislature. (Sounds familiar!?!) meanwhile they've evacuated Ugandan citizens from South Sudan. In Kampala, the mayor, who is from the minority party, has been arrested and generally harassed for no substantive reason. A week ago, we heard about another terrorist incident in Kenya. Life isn't a barrel of monkeys around here. Most of the tv sound is getting drowned out by the highly amplified music coming out of the adjacent house which happens to be the Rabbi's! He has several teenagers living with him and the United Synagogue Youth event is in full swing! Our hosts are one of the few households that has a pet. In this case, it's a little cat without a name except that they call her "puss puss."

Today, I will work on getting the blog up to date.  The system isn't stable, as yesterday eve it just went on and off every 15 minutes or so, but I managed to accomplish a lot, so, hopefully today I can finish, plus invite lots of people to view it.  Yesterday I communicated with Autumn on Facebook!  In real time.  Need to download Skype.

Yehudah wasn't sure how useful he was going to be at the Tobin Health Clinic, but it went quite well. He's good at finding ways of being helpful and is taking on a few projects that will hopefully improve the care a bit. For example, getting infection control more formalized. He did a brief intro to compassionate listening with the nursing staff, who responded positively. He also assisted at the circumcision of an adolescent boy. Then there was a commotion. Outside were about a hundred Muslims parading down this street, beating drums, dancing and waving saplings in the air. It was to honor the young man about to be circumcised. Different approach, heh!?!  One of the Eid holidays is coming up, so there may be a connection.

Guest House
Chicken delivery to the Guest House cook
Joanie successfully uploaded most of our photos to our blog, staying at the Guest House most of the day, so we are just about current!

Abayudaya Youth Association
CL Training with AYA
We did a short Compassionate Listening Training this morning with 80 or so teens plus taught them a dance, all in about an hour.  The rest of the day we hung out at the guest house on the internet.  It was stable all day!  Uploaded Skype, wanting to try it out.  This evening just staying in the living room, talking with Israel, watching the news, playing with Matan.  The girls are out socializing with the teens and their relatives.  So is the mom!
